Seven V-Shaped Knife Features and Uses

A V-Shaped Knife has angled cutting faces that meet at a pointed tip, allowing it to create V-grooves, fine lines, beveled edges, lettering, and decorative details. The included angle controls groove width in relation to cutting depth, while tip width, edge sharpness, and material determine achievable detail, strength, and surface quality.

Common angles include narrow designs for detailed engraving and wider designs for larger lettering, folding grooves, chamfers, and sign work. These tools are used on engravers, routers, plotters, and CNC machines with suitable wood, plastics, foam, laminates, composites, and nonferrous materials. Single-edge and multi-edge designs offer different chip space and productivity.

Select the angle, tip width, cutting diameter, shank, reach, substrate, and coating for the design and material. Minimize runout, secure the workpiece, use conservative depth, speed, and feed, and test the toolpath on scrap. A specialist engraving knife supplier can recommend suitable geometry.
