Seven V-Knife Selection Parameters
V-knife selection begins with the included angle because angle controls groove width, side slope, detail, and effective cutting depth. Narrow angles reach fine lettering and sharp corners but have more fragile tips. Wider angles create broad chamfers, bold signs, and stable shallow grooves. Tip width or flat size determines the smallest line and the appearance of the groove bottom.
Choose cutter diameter, edge length, overall length, shank, and maximum depth to match the feature and collet. Carbide grade and coating should suit wood, acrylic, foam, aluminum, laminate, or composite material. A single flute offers generous chip clearance; multiple edges may improve finish when the machine and material support them. Keep projection short to reduce vibration and tip breakage.
Complete V-knife selection by testing spindle speed, feed, pass depth, stepover, cutting direction, and workholding. Use shallow passes for delicate tips, verify runout, and clear chips so they are not recut. For variable-width lettering, remember that deeper cutting also makes the groove wider.
