Seven Bead Knife Shaping Tips
A bead knife is a shaped rotary cutter designed to form efficient, neat round beads and consistent decorative profiles. The cutting radius, bead diameter, flute geometry, shank size, carbide grade, and coating determine the finished shape and suitable material. Choose straight, sound stock without cracks, loose knots, or hidden metal to reduce catching, tearing, and unpredictable breakage.
Clamp the cutter with minimal overhang in a clean tool holder, verify low runout, and secure the blank firmly. Begin with a conservative spindle speed and feed, then adjust according to chip formation and surface finish. Apply shallow progressive passes, keep the toolpath centered on the bead profile, maintain steady engagement, and clear chips before they are recut. Stop the machine before measuring or adjusting. Clean resin from the edge, inspect for wear or chipping after every batch, and follow accepted woodworking safety practices to improve bead consistency and tool life.
