Five Tips for a Double-Bladed Straight Slot Tip Knife

A double-bladed straight slot tip knife uses two cutting edges and a pointed or end-cutting profile to create straight grooves, slots, outlines, and detailed recesses. Two edges distribute the cutting load and provide more cuts per revolution, which can improve surface finish on a rigid machine. Select the diameter, tip geometry, flute length, shank size, carbide grade, and coating for the workpiece.

Clamp the cutter with minimal overhang in a clean tool holder and verify low runout before machining. Use suitable spindle speed and feed for two flutes, because an incorrect feed can cause rubbing, heat, or excessive chip load. Apply shallow progressive passes for narrow or deep slots, maintain steady engagement through corners, and clear chips before they are recut. Avoid plunging beyond the tip specification and inspect both edges for equal wear or chipping. Correct setup and sound milling cutter practices improve groove accuracy, finish, and tool life.
