Seven Prayer Bead Blade Cutting Techniques

A prayer bead blade is a shaped rotary cutter used to form consistent wooden beads, rounded profiles, and decorative components. The blade radius, bead diameter, flute geometry, shank size, carbide grade, and coating determine the finished shape and suitable material. Begin with straight, sound stock without cracks, loose knots, or hidden metal to reduce catching and unpredictable breakage.

Clamp the cutter with minimal overhang in a clean tool holder, confirm low runout, and secure the blank firmly. Use a conservative spindle speed and feed for the first test, then adjust according to chip formation and surface quality. Apply shallow progressive passes, keep the toolpath centered, maintain steady engagement, and clear chips before they are recut. Stop the machine before measuring or making adjustments. Clean resin from the edge, inspect for wear or chipping after every batch, and follow accepted woodworking safety practices to improve bead accuracy, finish, and tool life.
