Seven Precautions for Using Ball Mills
Ball mills used as rounded-end cutting tools create three-dimensional contours, curved channels, molds, reliefs, and smooth transitions. Their spherical tip provides flexible contact, but the cutting speed approaches zero at the center of the tool. Correct tool orientation, engagement, and cutting parameters are therefore important for preventing rubbing, heat, deflection, and poor surface finish.
Select the diameter, flute length, neck clearance, carbide grade, and coating for the workpiece and required radius. Clamp the cutter with minimal overhang in a clean tool holder, verify low runout, and use suitable spindle speed, feed, step-down, and step-over. Avoid forcing the exact tool center into extended contact whenever the toolpath can be tilted or offset. Rough deep cavities with a stronger cutter before finishing, clear chips effectively, and inspect the rounded edge for wear or chipping. Follow sound milling cutter practices to improve contour accuracy, finish, and tool life.
