Seven Ingenious Applications of Diamond Tools
Diamond tools use natural or synthetic diamond abrasive to machine hard, brittle, and highly abrasive materials with excellent wear resistance. Common applications include cutting stone and ceramics, grinding carbide, drilling glass, polishing optical surfaces, engraving composites, dressing grinding wheels, and finishing nonferrous materials. The correct bond, grit size, concentration, geometry, and tool construction depend on the workpiece and required finish.
Select a tool designed for the machine, material, cutting direction, and coolant condition. Accurate tool holding, low runout, controlled speed, steady feed, shallow engagement, and effective cooling help prevent glazing, overheating, and premature wear. Avoid impact and excessive side pressure because diamond edges are hard but can be brittle. Clean the working surface, inspect the bond and rim, and dress the tool when the manufacturer permits. Correct setup improves accuracy, surface quality, productivity, and service life in diamond machining.
