Five Benefits of a Double-Sided Ball Nose End Mill
A double-sided ball nose end mill combines a rounded cutting profile with two cutting edges to machine curved surfaces, pockets, molds, and three-dimensional contours. The ball nose forms smooth transitions without sharp internal corners, while the paired edges share the cutting load and support stable material removal. This geometry is useful for semi-finishing and finishing wood, plastics, aluminum, nonferrous metals, and other suitable materials.
Select the cutter diameter, ball radius, flute length, shank size, material, and coating for the contour and workpiece. Accurate tool holding, low runout, suitable spindle speed, controlled feed, small step-over, gradual depth, and effective chip evacuation help prevent vibration, rubbing, and surface marks. Avoid excessive engagement near the center of the tip. Correct setup improves contour accuracy, finish consistency, productivity, and tool life in end milling.
