A centering drill combines a short pilot point with a larger countersink section to create an accurate starting location before a standard drill enters the workpiece. Its rigid, compact shape limits deflection and reduces wandering on flat, curved, or angled surfaces. The pilot forms a small guide hole, while the wider cutting section can produce a chamfer that protects the hole edge and supports later drilling, turning, or center-support operations.

Select the point diameter, body diameter, included angle, material, and coating to match the workpiece and required hole. Secure tool holding, correct alignment, suitable spindle speed, controlled feed, and cutting fluid help prevent point breakage and excessive heat. Avoid forcing a worn tool or drilling deeper than its designed pilot length. Careful setup improves concentricity, repeatability, and tool life in drilling applications.
