Five Daily Carving Tool Maintenance Tips
Carving tool maintenance starts immediately after each job. Disconnect the machine, remove the cutter safely, and clean resin, dust, and chips from the cutting edge and shank with a soft brush or suitable cleaner. Avoid hard scraping that can damage a polished edge. Dry the tool completely before storage, then apply a light rust-preventive oil when the material and coating allow it. A clean shank also improves collet grip and helps reduce runout during the next setup.
Inspect the edge for chips, dull areas, discoloration, cracks, and unusual wear before reuse. Store each cutter separately in a protective case so cutting edges cannot strike one another. Keep tools in a dry location away from corrosive chemicals and moisture. Use correct spindle speed, feed rate, and cutting depth for the material, because overheating and excessive load shorten tool life. Routine carving tool care improves accuracy, surface quality, and safety in milling and engraving work.
