Seven Column Knife Parameters
Column knife parameters determine cutting capacity, stiffness, chip evacuation, and compatibility with the machine. The main specifications are cutter diameter, cutting length, overall length, shank diameter, flute count, tool material, and coating. Diameter and cutting length define the reachable profile, while the shank and overall length affect rigidity and safe clamping.
Compare carbide grade, helix angle, edge geometry, flute space, maximum speed, and recommended feed according to wood, plastics, composites, foam, or nonferrous materials. Long cutting lengths increase access but also raise deflection and chatter risk, so minimize projection and reduce radial engagement when needed. Check collet condition, runout, spindle power, chip evacuation, cutting direction, and clearance around fixtures. Balance surface finish against flute count and feed per tooth. A dependable cutting tool supplier can match specifications to the task. Established milling cutter practices improve accuracy, finish, tool life, and safety.
