Seven Combination Cutting Tool Types

Combination cutting tool types perform two or more machining actions in one setup. Common examples include drill-countersinks, drill-chamfer tools, step drills, combination boring tools, slotting and chamfer cutters, profile-and-trim cutters, and multi-edge woodworking sets. Combining operations reduces tool changes, cycle time, and accumulated positioning error.

Select a combination tool only when all cutting sections match the hole, groove, profile, or edge dimensions required by the part. Compare diameter, step lengths, included angles, shank or arbor size, flute design, carbide grade, coating, and machine clearance. The feed and speed must protect the most heavily loaded cutting section, and chip evacuation must work through the entire operation. Check runout, tool projection, spindle power, workholding, coolant or dust extraction, and collision risk before production. A reliable cutting tool supplier can recommend compatible geometry. Established cutting tool practices improve accuracy, productivity, tool life, and safety.
