Engraving Knife Selection Factors

Engraving Knife Selection depends on the workpiece, feature size, engraving depth, machine power, required detail, and surface finish. Matching geometry and material to the job prevents breakage, burrs, burning, and lost accuracy.

V-shaped knives create lettering, chamfers, and decorative grooves, with smaller angles producing finer details. Flat-bottom cutters clear pockets and produce level recesses, while ball-nose tools machine curves and three-dimensional reliefs. Single-flute carbide cutters evacuate chips well in plastics and aluminum, and PCD suits abrasive production materials.

Consider diameter, tip width, flute length, coating, spindle speed, feed rate, runout, and workholding. Use the shortest safe projection and test on scrap before production. A knowledgeable cutting tool manufacturer can recommend geometry and grade; review basic engraving methods when planning fine features.
