Seven Engraving Knife Features and Uses

An Engraving Knife is a precision tool used to create lettering, patterns, lines, grooves, logos, and decorative details on suitable metal, wood, plastics, acrylic, stone, laminates, foam, and composite materials. Pointed, V-shaped, flat, ball-end, and profiled geometries produce different groove shapes, line widths, depths, corners, and surface effects.

Important characteristics include cutting angle, tip width, edge radius, flute design, shank size, reach, substrate, and coating. Narrow tips capture fine details, wide-angle tools strengthen the point, flat ends create level-bottom features, and rounded tools follow curved contours. The material and machine determine the required edge strength and cutting parameters.

Select geometry from the drawing, material, depth, and smallest feature. Secure the workpiece, minimize runout, use conservative depth, suitable speed and feed, and test the toolpath on scrap. A specialist engraving knife supplier can recommend compatible designs. General engraving information also explains tools, techniques, materials, artistic methods, and industrial applications.
