Five Pointed Nose Knife Depth Control Rules
Pointed nose knife depth control determines the width of a V-shaped groove because the cutter becomes wider as it enters the material. For a fixed point angle, a shallow pass creates a narrow line and a deeper pass creates a wider line. Accurate results therefore depend on consistent Z-axis zeroing, known tool geometry, minimal runout, and a flat work surface.
Calculate the required depth from the desired groove width and included angle, then verify the result with a test cut. Use small step-down values because the tip is fragile, especially in hard or abrasive materials. Secure the workpiece, select suitable spindle speed and feed, and avoid plunging or direction changes that overload the point. Check tool projection, collet condition, surface flatness, and machine calibration before production. A reliable cutting tool supplier can recommend the correct point angle and material. Following established engraving practices improves line consistency, finish, tool life, and safety.
