Five Tips for a Round-Bottomed Sharp Knife

A round-bottomed sharp knife combines a curved cutting profile with a keen edge to create smooth grooves, channels, flutes, and decorative contours. The rounded bottom avoids sharp internal corners and produces flowing surfaces that require less manual finishing. This geometry is useful for woodworking, sign making, relief carving, mold details, plastics, and other compatible materials when the cutter specification matches the workpiece.

Select the cutter diameter, bottom radius, flute length, shank size, material, and coating for the required groove and depth. Accurate tool holding, low runout, suitable spindle speed, controlled feed, shallow step-down, and effective chip evacuation help prevent vibration, burning, and surface marks. Use progressive passes and inspect the curved edge for wear. Correct setup improves groove consistency, contour accuracy, surface quality, productivity, and tool life in routing applications.
