Seven Slotting Knives Usage Tips

Slotting knives create accurate grooves, channels, keyways, joints, and narrow recesses in compatible wood, plastic, composite, and metal applications. Cutter diameter, face width, tooth count, bore or shank, material, coating, and edge geometry determine the suitable machine and cutting load. Select the design according to slot width, depth, workpiece, spindle power, and desired finish.

Clean the mounting surfaces, clamp the cutter securely, and verify alignment and runout before cutting. Use suitable spindle speed, feed per tooth, depth, and coolant or air flow for the material. Apply progressive passes for deep slots, maintain steady engagement through corners, and clear chips before they are recut. Secure the workpiece, avoid excessive side pressure, and stop the machine before measuring or removing debris. Inspect the teeth or edges for wear, chipping, or built-up material and obtain compatible products from a reliable tool supplier. Accepted milling cutter practices improve accuracy and safety.
