Seven Three-Sided Milling Cutter Applications

Three-sided milling cutter applications include machining straight slots, shoulders, side surfaces, keyways, spacer grooves, stepped features, and accurate widths. Teeth on the circumference and both side faces allow the cutter to remove material from three directions in one setup. Diameter, width, tooth count, bore, cutter material, and coating determine the suitable machine, workpiece, and cutting load.

Clean the arbor, spacers, bore, and contact faces before mounting, tighten the assembly correctly, and verify alignment. Use spindle speed, feed per tooth, depth, and coolant or air flow appropriate for the material. Avoid excessive side load, sudden engagement, and recutting trapped chips. Support long arbors correctly, secure the workpiece, and stop the machine before measuring or clearing debris. Inspect the teeth for uneven wear, chipping, or built-up edge and obtain compatible components from a reliable tool supplier. Accepted milling cutter practices improve accuracy and safety.
