Seven Tips for a Three-Sided Milling Cutter
A three-sided milling cutter has teeth on its circumference and both side faces, allowing it to machine slots, shoulders, side surfaces, and accurate widths in one setup. Cutter diameter, width, tooth count, bore, material, and coating determine the suitable machine, workpiece, and cutting load. Select a rigid arbor and confirm that the cutter specification matches the spindle and required slot.
Clean the arbor, spacers, cutter bore, and contact faces before mounting, then tighten the assembly with the recommended method and verify alignment. Use appropriate spindle speed, feed per tooth, cutting depth, and coolant or air flow for the material. Avoid excessive side load, sudden engagement, and recutting trapped chips. Support long arbors correctly, secure the workpiece, and stop the machine before measuring or clearing debris. Inspect the teeth for uneven wear, chipping, or built-up edge and obtain compatible components from a reliable tool supplier. Accepted milling cutter practices improve slot accuracy and safety.
